Construction update

Sorry I meant to post this earlier in the week, but it's been a tough week in the Geddis household, and needless to say it just didn't happen. But here is where the greatly anticipated pantry is at. Drywall finished, texture sprayed, and primed. Now waiting for time to paint the inside then and some shelves and fill 'er up! The wall will remain primed until we do the rest of the kitchen which will be soon? Maybe. But we have a bust couple of weeks coming up. Vacation is just a week away now and this weekend is filled with big state races so we are otherwise occupied and the construction will just have to wait! So close yet so far away. All in good time though.

Project update

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I was hoping to have some finished photos of the laundry room, but apparently we have jumped onto the next project first. Bryan got the dry wall up for the pantry and is working on mud now. Unfortunately the weather has been so cold the mud isn't drying fast enough so this might take a while. This is after the first coat. The pantry is only 14 inches deep I think so that makes working inside the closet a bit difficult, but it will be awesome once it's all finished. Can't wait for that!

So on Sunday while he was working on that I was hanging artwork in the Living Room. BY MYSELF! Usually I'm not allowed to wield a hammer in the house because I tend to eyeball it and we end up with lots of little nail holes in the wall. Well this time I actually measured everything and ended up with perfect straight and even artwork! I'm so proud of myself. Now I just need to go get some more candles to finish the look.

It looks kind of weird to see something on that wall when it has been bare for so long, but now it's starting to look more finished. I just love that wall, and all the iron and scroll patterns match the light fixtures in the rooms perfectly. Love it!
Now if I could just get my nerve up to hang the dishes I bought for the dining room wall. And I need to finish accessorizing the hutch too. It finally found a permanent home, but I'm not happy with the stuff displayed on it yet.
I need new flowers, baskets for above, and more color for sure. It will be a work in progress that I'm sure I will be picking stuff up for as I find it. That's it for now. Not much work going on this week since Bryan has a meeting tomorrow and we will be getting ready for the holiday weekend. Can't wait for all that fun!

On to the next project

Came home from work to this. Actually the front door was opened with an air hose was running up the stairs and behind the mysterious curtain. Just what is behind the curtain you ask?

The wall that will soon be hosting my new pantry! Bryan started on the next project before I could get good before pictures, so this is the best I can do. All my pantry items used to be in the cabinets down in the laundry room. Extremely inconvenient when cooking and I constantly had to run downstairs to get something from the pantry. (Actually the kids had to run up and down the stairs to bring me things. I'm not crazy, that's what I had them for isn't it?)

Anyway, since we took all the extra cabinets down in the laundry room I needed a new pantry. I have been wanting to move the pantry up in the kitchen for a long time, just hadn't figured out how to do it yet. We decided we no longer needed an eating area in the kitchen when the dining room is just on the other side of the kitchen. So that's where my new pantry is going. Then at the end of the wall by the french doors will be a recycling center with a built in cabinet to hold the garbage can & pop cans.

Hopefully it will be a quick project and then we can tackle the rest of the kitchen. The rest of the kitchen includes new flooring, new countertops & backsplash, and reconfiguring a couple of cabinets to get more counter space. Fairly easy and inexpensive I hope!

Getting it done one load at a time!

So the laundry room is ALMOST complete. The walls are painted, the floor has been tiled, the cabinets have been hung again and the washed & dryer replaced. We just need to put the sink back, hang a few accessories, do some prettying up and trim work, then it is finished. I love it so much already. Such a happy color I might actually enjoy doing laundry. Well, let's not push it, but at least it will be a more enjoyable room to be in now! Won't be long now, but first.... I have some laundry to do!

A sneak Peek!

Just a sneak peek to what I came home from work to yesterday! Yes, Bryan painted the laundry room, and I LOVE the color! So bright and happy. Still have to paint the ceiling, but with the white trim and accents in the room it's going to look so fun! Now if only I could convince him to let me paint the cabinets....

Happy Earth Day! (Better Late than Never!)

I finally finished my placemat & napkin project! I just love using cloth napkins and cute placemats for meals. So much nicer looking than paper napkins on the table! And more environmentally friendly than throwing away paper napkins all the time. So what kind of started as an Earth Day project, turned into a great excuse to use my new serger!

I had been wanting some new everyday placemats for the table that went with the new colors I was playing around with for the living/Dining room. When I found this fabric at Fabric Depot the last time we were there a I knew it was perfect! It is now the inspiration for not only the laundry room, but the kitchen makeover as well! The placemats are reversible. We have the light springy side for now, and the dark chocolate brown for the fall and winter months.

The napkins were a super breeze to make. I love rolled hems! My new serger makes them so easily, with just a flick of a switch - gotta love that! I could make those all day long! Now I need some cute new napkin rings worthy of the new napkins.

Laundry Room

So we have started work on the laundry room. Actually we are halfway through with the laundry room project, but I'm just getting around to showing you the progress. I'm very excited to get it all finished so it can actually function as a laundry room and not as a dumping ground for all the tools & crap that seemed to collect in there.

This started because Bryan wanted to finish out the tile floor downstairs. It was a project we actually had everything we needed, so seemed simple enough. But as always happens, the project quickly spiraled into something more. Kind of like the "If you give a Mouse a Cookie" book.

It started with tiling the floor. But since you are going to be doing that might as well fix the holes in the wall. And while at that might as well scraped the popcorn off the ceiling. And while doing that you might as well fix the heat duct which is exposed and just sprayed with popcorn instead of finished off properly.
In order to do all that of course all cabinets must be removed from the walls. This leads to deciding to create a pantry upstairs in the kitchen instead of storing all the food downstairs in the laundry room where there was an overload of cabinets. While there was storage galore in this room, it was very inconvenient to constantly run downstairs for that can of tomato sauce or box of noodles for dinner.

Unfortunately I didn't get a very good before picture of the enclosed hallway this room looked like with 2 full walls of cabinets. The countertop was great on the one wall, but the room always felt very claustrophobic due to the excessive use of cabinets. Which didn't even match.
Bryan had already started removing cabinets when I remembered I didn't have a before picture. But you can tell where the cabinets used to be by the paint color on the wall.
Notice these cabinets don't match the ones on the other side of the room.

Progress being made. Walls all repaired, popcorn ceiling scraped, heating duct covered. Originally when we bought the house there were 2 laundry rooms. At one time our house functioned as an Adult Care facility. They had added a really crappy room outside our ugly laundry room door and put another set of washer & dryer out there. The plumbing was jimmy-rigged in here to accommodate the new "laundry facilities". We removed all that when fixing the bathroom downstairs, knowing we would repair the walls when we finished the laundry room. We also removed the room outside and reclaimed the lovely covered patio outside last year.

Halfway there! Texture sprayed & walls primed. Looks so much better already! We took a break in order to get some laundry done. Apparently when dad says "Get all your laundry done because the washing machine is coming out" that actually means wash a couple of pairs of pants, but forget to actually do the full basket of dirty clothes in your room. I think they get the concept of no washer & dryer while the room gets redone now.

So now it's on to the floors before we can paint the walls.
I know you can't see it, but the white circle in front of the kitty door is a perfect paw print cast out of some wet mud that dropped during the drywall phase of the project. Poor kitty wasn't too happy with dear old dad I'm sure! LOL

And what is the finished color going to be you ask? Well here is the wall color & fabric for the curtain for the door.
I absolutely love this fabric and plan on using it upstairs in the kitchen too. Only with green instead of the turquoise. The wall color is the new Martha Stewart paint at Home Depot. The color is called Hummingbird Blue. Matches the blue color in the fabric perfectly! The fabric is a Moda print of course. From the Cherish Nature line. I LOVE Moda fabrics!

It was actually sort of Bryan's idea to paint a bright color in here. He wanted to use a color for the walls! My dear hubby. Lover of white walls actually suggested using a color we haven't used yet. Something bright and different. I'm so proud of him! I never thought I would get to actually use a bright color like this in my house, but I'm so excited to try it out.

So this weekend it's removing old flooring and tiling the floor. Then we can paint! Can't wait!

Before and the beautiful after

Well the living room is finally officially done! And it looks amazing! Still have some decorating to do, but the final piece - the new couch was put in place last night. So in honor of the beautiful new room here are some before, during, and after pictures to document a job well done!
The before - with the ugly carpet & dirty fireplace
The boring stark white walls, lack of proper lighting and popcorn ceilings. Ugh.
Freshly scraped ceiling, new lighting installed and nicely primed walls
Oooohhh beautiful paint!
The floors are going in. I am so in love with my new floors!

Our beautiful and VERY BRIGHT new entry way chandelier, & the newly tiled railing
The finished hallway. Just need doorknobs & paint on the air return vent
The fireplace ready for Christmas. Just need to hang the stockings!

The finished room, complete with Christmas tree, couch & sleepy boy!

The view from the hallway - with a very cute Muscles I might add!

More house progress

Well we have made some great progress with the upstairs living room & dining room recently. Here are some pictures of the progress we have made. The finished results will be fabulous, and just having the paint on the walls has been an amazing transformation! Can't wait to get the new flooring laid!

Living Room before pictures

Living room during - Popcorn scraped off the ceiling and new lighting has been installed, and Bryan built a little wall by the entry to help straighten the wall by the stairs.

Look how the fireplace pops with the color on the wall!

Dining Room before
Dining room during - Popcorn scraped off the ceiling, and the random niches filled in

Dining room with paint! Looks fabulous!

Finally! Furniture downstairs!

Well we finally got the furniture moved downstairs into the family room. It now looks like an actual room. And it's a very cozy place to watch TV too. The surround sound is very cool and even the cats like hanging out downstairs!

So now the work begins on the upstairs rooms. We will be starting with the living room & dining room. Can't wait to see those completed as well. It's the perfect time to start working inside again. Weather is starting to change and we have plenty of indoor projects to do! Hopefully the living room won't take long. Just a matter of scraping popcorn off the ceiling, adding can lights & a ceiling fan in the living room and filling in the weird niches in the dining room. Then painting and finally putting in the flooring, along with new light fixtures. Can't wait! Should keep my husband busy while I'm in California at least! I'll post progress pictures the end of next week.

Petal Power

Our yard and pots are in full bloom now so I thought I would take some pictures to share how pretty they look. I love this time of year! Our petunias are looking very nice. Much better than the Fuchsias we tried planting last year.

A close up of the rose bush by our front door. The thing grows like a weed!

Love these baskets. They turned out so nicely!

My absolute favorite. The Peonies. We were supposed to have 2 white, 2 light pink and 2 hot pink, but it looks like we might have gotten 3 white, 1 light pink and 2 hot pink since I have 3 plants with white peonies blooming. Looks like the pink ones won't be blooming this year, but at least the white ones did. And they smell wonderful too!

And of course, no post is complete without some kitty pictures! Here's Muscles hanging out with us looking cute and regal as usual. Didn't want to be pet of course, but demanded you know he was there. What a crazy cat!
